Default Getting bass into the cabin

I'm going to be working on my gf's s2000 this spring, and am looking for the best way to get subbass from the trunk into the cabin. On first glance, it appears the the trunk is completely seperated from the car's interior. Is there a passthrough anywhere that I am not seeing? I have a convertible years ago, and I know that before I found the passthrough I got far less bass and way more rattles. Also, I remember downfiring the box helped. Will either of these methods help with bass output in the car? thanks for the guidance.

A couple of options for you. I guess the first would be the standard well box holding 1 10", 2 10" or 1 12" sub. These boxes you can find pre-made on ebay ranging from 80-200 dollars for the enclosure minus subs. These boxes should give you a pretty decent sound with the top up. On the firing downward note, I was actually considering doing something like this myself. You will get a little more "seat of the pants" bass which is good for top down occasions, but I think lose a little "top up" bass. A couple of suggestions if you are going to use the downfiring method, use a 12" sub and Dynamat,Dynamat,Dynamat. I would think a shop could build you an enclosure for a downfiring 12 for about 150-200 dollars.
Another option would be a couple of 5WS Focal's located in the cabin. Either in the footwell area or the center compartment. If done right, these can give you a pretty good bass response but still wont give you the amount of a standard sub.
Hope the suggestions will help you decide which way to go on getting the bass.

Trust me here... if you have a properly made box and the sub properly powered and tuned you'll have zero problems hearing/feeling the bass in the cabin I've had just (1) 10" Alpine Type-R and its enough for me all day long, top up or down it doesn't matter.
The trunk is vented into the cabin by means of vents behind the seats

Like mentioned above you need to dynamat the whole trunk top to bottom.

I can build you a box if you need help with it. I'm a sponsor here and I can help you get product as well.

Tuning is far more important than product, in the car audio world just as in the car performance world. A great install is far more effective, even with poor equipment.

But there are a couple options as far as product goes if you want to get a little crazy. Focal and Kicker both make extremely small subs that can fit in your doors and give some very nice bass up front. Also take a look at bass shakers, like Aural makes (I dont' know if Alpine still makes any or not, don't think they do). These give you the feeling of low bass (mounted underneat or behind your seats, but won't give you the nice-sounding, quality 100hz range bass that a good sub (and properly built enclosure) will - they work very well together though, esp. if you do a lot of highway driving with the top down.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm a proponent of high-end gear installed properly. She really liked the CDT eurosports I had in her last car, but I want to convince her to use something with a stronger midbass (I have DLS iridiums that I love).

I don't have an s2000, but here's my install/ride:

Oh, and I'm no stranger to sound deadener. My front doors have 4 layers of Raamat BXT (I prefer butyl based sound deadener) on the outer skin. I still have more dampening to go to get rid of all rattles, but the bottom line is I'm addicted to this stuff

I'll probably go with a single IDQ12 since I've always been an image dynamics fan, especially for a medium size sealed enclosure. Looks like upwards firing is the way to go. That makes things somewhat easier. Where are the vents behind the seats? Is it possible to slotload into those vents? Just want to try all my options. I'd also like to do something more creative than just the tire-equipment well, but I don't think there are too many options with this lil' trunk.

Nice car BTW. I like the Alpine HU mounted like that.

On another note there plenty of room if you don't mind not using the trunk

I have a Boston Acoustic G510-4 in my trunk. Its a very low volume sub (~.5CF), so it works well in our cars. Also, its a pretty high excursion sub with rather large magnets, so the overall bass is great. Its actually a more musical sub than I was expecting (based on cone materials and overall shape).

I am running 440wrms to this sub, and I cannot keep the gain over 1/2 - 2/3, or the bass drives me NUTS (headache)! As said above, getting bass into the cabin will not be a problem.

There are a pair of pass-throughs into the cabin from the trunk (look at the panels behind the seats.....the little vent looking things). This communicates directly with the cabin.

Also, if you want to go UBER-custom, I have seen some people mold a sub into the center console (loose function of glove box area, but the sub is RIGHT there). I have also seen somone drop a Kicker (L5 or L7......cant remember) flush into the soft-top tray. This will undoubtedly produce rattles with top down, but then you have wind / road noise to contend with anyways. Would have to be completely custom, though, as there is not much clearance for a deep-mount sub, and the tray would have to be completely re-worked for added reinforcement.

Just a few ideas. Check out the Gallery at the top in the Stickies section. That should give you a few ideas of what is possible in this car.

If you are looking for something "unique", you could mount a single 10" sub where the spare tire is now, firing back, then port the box to the vent behind the passenger seat. Would be VERY difficult to do this, because tuning the box would be a b*tch, and the working space is almost non-existent.
