Default Going back to Stock Head Unit

Hey guys,

I recently bought a 2007 S2K. The previous owner installed an Alpine CDA-105. He Also supplied the OEM head unit in a box for me. I want to revert back to the stock H/U as I like to keep everything original and like that original look. However, not if it's at the expense of a MAJOR downgrade in sound quality. I don't care about the iPod hookup so if I loose that I dont care. I guess my question is... will there be a major difference in sound? I am ok with a little downgrade as the sound kind of sucks anyway. Any insight on this would be great!

Also, I know he also installed the Modifry dash control. Will I have to do any splicing or soldering at all by going back to the original H/U?

Thanks guys for any help.

Keep the aftermarket unit in there. The main difference you'll notice is that the stock HU doesn't have enough power to drive even the stock cones in the car. If you drive top down a lot, even with the stock unit cranked all the way up, it will be difficult to hear anything.

The stock HU was designed to drive paper cones... nuff said?

Thanks for your reply.

Are you talking from experience using the AP1 head unit or the AP2's head unit? I ask because I have read (on this forum) that there is a big difference between these two OEM S2000 head units. The AP2 being a huge improvement. So I am now wondering if there is a big difference between the AP2 H/U and Alpine CDA-105.

Thanks again,

Ap2 stock unit is terrible. Volume is virtually non existent with top down unless you crank it up past 30 it only goes to 40 so you do the math. The antenna also sucks so regular radio always seems choppy.

Ok. I'm convinced! Thanks guys.

Interesting about the antenna. Do you mean the antenna sticking out of the trunk area of the car is crap, or were you referring to something built into the OEM H/U?

When listening to the radio, the quality, and bass are virtually cut in half. Please don't go back to OEM

I've been told OEM is horrible. From my experience I love it, want to solve the quality and bass problem? Just install a pair of aftermarket speakers. Luckily for me my car had a aftermarket deck but I wanted go maintain a stock look and keep my audio controls. Even luckily for me I got the OEM radio with the purchase and he installed Pioneer speakers. I had a AEM V2 intake and would drive with the top down and wouldn't turn the volume past 20. No I do not have an amp installed. Now Im back on stock intake gutted. OP I recommend you just buy a pair of speakers.
