Experiment with cardboard until you get the right shape for the mount. Good Luck (success).

Have you made the GPS mount yet, or perhaps one similar? Just curious........

 

How do you fasten the mount to the ?radio door? is it permanent or removable? Is the radio door closeable now?

 

The OP designed it so friction holds the base plate in the card holder, and it only needs to be pulled out for the door to close again.

 

OK, in the zero creativity department: here is my set-up .

Bought a vent clip Arkon GNO47 and added my GPS PTT (push to talk) remote to the handbrake and voila!

With the basic audio remote controls, no need for the door to be opened .

 

if you go for not very slick installation - why not just use good windshield mount? (Virus for example)

 

Windshield mounts aren't legal in all places. Not everyone prefers windshield mounts.

 

Lacking the power tools, necessary glue and time for shopping, cutting, and other project work, I bought one of these from Don and it's works great. No vibration. I just made a weekend trip to Los Angeles and it was fine. The fit is perfect and the holder worked as promised. My GPS power cord connects right above the holder, but my mount has a swivel head and I could rotate it it up a little bit for clearance. I used the windshield mount that came with my new GPS and did not have to order the dash mount. Don's price was very reasonable.

I also have a folding cup holder mounted similar to Don's. Using a one-liter water bottle, I found I had to rotate the GPS and holder slightly inwards toward the gear shifter to raise the bottle freely, but that was only a minor inconvenience. I may relocate the cup holder for the next trip. My cup holder at that location is only mounted with one screw, with intentions of a second screw or Velcro to be added later. The water bottle cup holder rotated a bit during travel, so that may have something to do with the alignment. I also have a folding cup holder on the driver's side but found a minor annoyance with the one liter bottle touching my left leg. I plan to move that one close to the driver's seat for leg clearance.

You do take your eyes off the road momentarily when reading the GPS in this position, so please be safe when operating it. Do trip planning and adjustments while you are not in motion unless you have a passenger who can perform those functions for you.
