Arrow Hardwiring Navigation System

Here's my original post on the s2000 talk board:

https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=301347

I want to hardwire a Tom Tom Go Navigation system into my S - what's the best way to do this? Someone suggested that I "tap into the power supply under (my) feet" via the fuse box. Where can I find detailed instructions for doing this? Have any of you guys using similar external nav systems done this? The guys on the s2000 talk board were very helpful with their suggestions; however, I have very little experience doing anything electrical and thus I'm looking for more detailed instruction/pictures about this process? Should I just have a professional do this mod instead? If so, how much would it cost? Thanks for spending the time to read all my questions - I'm so glad I have s2ki as a resource.

Best,

Jim

Good info, steven975. Ok, now that I know I should be wiring into the fuse box, how do I go about doing the wiring? Which connector in the fuse box should I connect to and how do I do the wiring (in laymans terms)? Now, since I plan on putting my nav on my dash, where can I run the wire such that it is out of the way? Can I put it through the air vents? If so, how do I do this and specifically what path should I run the wires through? Thanks guys...I'm slowly starting to figure out how to do this.

While the GPS draws about 10 amps, and the stock radio pulls about the same amount, you're looking at 20 amps through a 16 awg wire, which I can understand why some people have doubts. IMO, you'll be fine tapping into the radio's wire. We do this all the time with Digital Sattelite Radio and Radar Detectors with no problems. You can also locate the ignition harness underneath the steering column and tap into the accessory or ignition wire. Make sure you use a fuse if you decide to go this route.

Yeah you're probably right, I glanced at the other thread and read the amperage draw on that unit. Overhead monitors, cd changers, etc. take less than 5 amps, so I doubt the GPS takes that much.
