head unit gets very hot, no sound to speakers
My 00 stereo worked fine for several months since I got it. Then one day I noticed the sound would cut out, then come back after a little while. Eventually it just cut out all together. The stereo would still be on, just no sound. So I take the doors apart and find Infinity reference components installed very hack job. wire just twisted together, speakers too big and just screwed into the plastic housing. So I redo the wires with connectors, etc. And still the same issue. As soon as I plug in the HU to the harness, it gets really hot within like 15 seconds, even without turning the HU on.
It had a Pioneer HU in it, so I put the Honda one back in, same issue. Then I unhook the crossovers altogether, and the same thing happens. I replaced the ACC fuse and radio fuse just in case, same problem. I think it must be a problem in the radio harness? Anyone have this issue?

Does the harness look like it was cut into? Are you sure you checked the doors throughly to make sure nothing else was wrong? Sound like Mr. Hackjob did a number on your car... I would take it all apart and starting looking at everything just to be safe.
from what i can see the harness behind the radio looks ok. at least they used the proper dash harness. i even redid that and shrink wrapped it just to be sure. everything from the doors looks fine now, definitely much better than it was. all the wiring is properly connected now and shrinked. the part that gets me is the radio will heat up even I unhook all the speakers and crossovers. So the radio is just hooked to the chassis harness only. That tells me it has to be the harness somewhere.
It almost seems as if that the deck is drawing to much current (amps). This can happen if there is a short in the circuit or a bad fuse could cause it as well.
You should run a direct line from the battery to the HU (make sure its fused), then a ground should also be tempted out as well, close to the radio on the chassis steel. Once you that see if it happens again. I know its a pain but you really need to test each part of the circuit. If it comes on fine then start to connect each wire until it starts to happen again. You're going to have to redo the harness again but its the only way to be sure which line is the issue.
