I'm having my aftermarket stereo removed...trying to put everything back to stock myself (and help of a good friend)... How to remove a charged capacitor safely?? Doesn't the capacitor still charged after I remove it off the stereo??? How do I safely discharge it and not damaging the capacitor itself..

thanks,

Find a 1 megaohm (MEGA, not kilo) resistor and place it across the leads for a while...those caps have a lot of energy to bleed off.

Disconnect the cap. Put black electrical tape around the terminal heads and your all set to put it aside and install in the S. Just be careful.

Worst case is you take a screw driver cross the terminals and get a fire works show! Believe me its not gonna blow up if its a good cap it will just put a big dent in your screw driver! I have done it before! Plus I have seen a demonstration where this guy charged and discharged it with no resistors dozens of times. What a show that was!

Just be careful tape it up and your all set.

ya.. I think I paid $100 for my Rockord Fosgate 1 Farad capacitor... I assume I attach both lead on the metal part of the screw driver?? Sounds kinda dangerous to me..
Probably will go with the resistor route...

Find a "friend" and say catch as you toss it to 'em.

P.S. They won't think it's funny but every else sure will!

FYI, if you do use a screwdriver or such, use a Sears Craftsman tool. They have an excellent lifetime policy of replacing damaged tools.

I heard of a fire department that melted a wrench accidentally (dropped it into a power grid area). The guys brought the molten globules back to Sears in a bag and got a replacement.
