Default HELP! I Have A Smoking Head Unit!!!

I was installing a Pioneer Premier DEH-730 deck into my sister's 2001 Volkswagen GTI when it started smoking. I soldered and taped off all the wires from the wiring harness to the head unit, pulled out the factory tape deck, and plugged in the head unit. That's when the speakers started playing static and smoke came from the head unit. I unplugged the head unit right away. I rechecked all the wires and don't see anything wrong. The fuse did blow and I replaced it. Tried to plug it in again and the fuse blew out again. What should I do now?

Thanks,

Mark

Get a multi-meter (volt-meter) and test all your connections to make sure you have it wired correctly.

Sounds like you've got some wires crossed. Check all connections. If need be, remove all connections but the unswitched hot and ground. Connect the switched lead, then each set of speakers. Turn off the power between each connection. Make one connection and check it.

I also had something similar happen when I fused a voice coil on a speaker. Do you know if the speakers are good?

I would check the insulation on all of your wires as well. You probably have a conductor shorting to ground. In other words, one of the wires is probably touching metal.

Smoke is bad. I doubt your fuse protected your head unit. Test it or have it tested.
