HID replacement
That's still true today, only that the "raw materials" are rolls of sheet metal, nuts/bolts, wire harnesses, etc. instead of iron ore/coal, plastic, etc. We get more specialized and compartmentalized as a society the longer we survive...with both the good AND bad that comes with it.
3 times as bright is a subjective measurement. Halogens give off a LOT more IR energy than our HIDs which helps with the cops and LIDAR. From the layman's point of view, though, most people look at at and go "Wow, that sure is bright!" So 3 times as bright is a good enough measurement
Yes, minimizing use will increase their life expectancy, but their life is so long whiy worry about it? I am sure to turn the lights on everytime I get in the car, day or night. If it prevents some shmoe driving into me during the day, I'll keep them on.
