does anyone know the pros/cons of creating spacers vs modifying the stock baskets? which, if either, is a better solution
They are not the same. Cutting up speaker baskets is done so you dont have to drill new mounting holes in the door.

If you follow the directions of my spacers you don't have to drill the door, as I use the existing holes to mount the spacers to.

If you have no intentions of putting your car back to stock then cut up your stock speaker brackets. There really is no difference between the two just some speakers will not fit with the stock brackets.

Hey Dylan Hunt, if you dont paint or seal the MDF, any water that hits it will make it split and spread...kinda like a flower if you can imagine that, and as time goes on, it wont be solid as the layers spread from eachother and you will lose alot of sound quality and the speaker wont seat tight anymore....so try not to skip that step

Hello, my name is Paul.
Just want to add my DIY about brackets. (and sorry for my "russian" english

I used plywood instead of MDF, because thought that it might have a bit more vibration and sound insulation than MDF coz it is more solid material. And MDF I guess a little lighter

tools and materials:
3/4 plywood, thin sharpie, jigsaw, drill, liquid vinyl tape, seam tape, oem bracket to do measure, sand paper

1) first you need to cut the center hole for speaker, mark the circle and drill the hole inside the circle right near circle marking.
2) Then use thin blade in jigsaw - it is easier to make a corners.
3) after the center hole is cut, use the oem bracket backward (like you are installing it in the door) and mark the rest of the are as well as screws holes.
4) before cutting the whole bracket - drill screw holes first, because if you do it after, you can damage the edges and whole bracket.
5) when finished with screw holes, you can make a test fit of you speaker and mark the screws for it, but I personally decided to use self-drilling screws so I didn't drill for it.
6) after drilling is done start cutting the bracket, but when you cut around the screw holes make radius a bit more wider than oem corner - the stronger will be you bracket.
7) after cutting use sand paper to make surface smooth
8) use wet papertowel to remove all wood dust
9) since the plywood is not very strong material against water and temperature drop I decided to cover it with liquid tape and then seam tape. (see pictures below). Before you paint them or anything, do the test fit in the door to make sure the holes measures are right

I like what I did and the brackets fit perfectly. Here are some pics.

BUMP this Awesome thread!!! I bought some MDF tonight will try to attempt the speaker mounts. I might just use the old brackets if this fail on me.

Ive completed my set up, just need to clean up my mistakes, so far thats just the speaker brackets. I bought a 1" spacer from best buy and it was too big. The 1/2" spacer was too small... And i cant seem to find a place that sells 3/4" spacers... If there is i would rather buy them since i need them for both my GPW and Suzuka ap2`s. Im running K2P and Alpine Type-X 6.5" on both.

Hopefully someone can help me in guiding me with the install...

Thanks
