How-To: Wiring new door speakers

Jeff,
I'm now trying to do what you had done. I've gotten my door panel apart, the kick panel off, and have no clue how to pull the grommet off of the car and through the door. Before I totally mess things up, do you have any pointers?

Did you use pliers to do this? The hole in the footwell is so small, I can barely get my fingers in to do anything. The door is even worse. I'm so frustrated with this, I am having to sit back and take a breather (besides, it is raining outside, and I can't do this in the garage). ACK!!!!!!

Nope. I just used my hands. You can use your other hand to wiggle the grommit from the outside and help pull it from the door or dash. Essentially, the grommit has a lip that is 'rolled' around the hole in the door/dash. You need to 'unroll' that lip or squeeze it together so it clears the metal and push it out. I found that getting one small section started first, then wiggling/twisting it free was quicker than trying to pop the whole thing out at once -- and much easier on my knuckles!

OK.... After a LOT more bruising, I finally got it back IN. Note to anyone following these instructions: Put the windows partially UP before you disconnect anything or take off the door panels. I didn't. With the windows fully down, they made the process of putting the grommets back in so much harder. You may also want to put electrical tape around the bottom of the metal window slides near the grommets; they are sharp.

To do mine, I removed the tape from the rubber grommet. Then I tightly wrapped my speaker wire to a coat hanger with electrical tape. After coating the wire and tape with a mixture of liquid dish soap and water, I tried sliding the wires through. I had ZERO trouble with this method and it took me less than 30 minutes to remove all of the panels and run the wires.

Good guide...just 2 things...
DO NOT USE A SNAKE WITH A HOOK AT THE END. You will shred your wires in the door, and "proper f*ck" yourself.
A little lube goes a long way.
