HU preference data
Being the nearly-world-famous Modifry I frequently get asked for advice and one of the most common questions is "which head unit would you recommend?" Unfortunately (for those asking) I'm really not an expert or even a well-informed source on car stereo components. I'm well-versed in electronics and audio in general but despite the fact that I make audio accessories (the DCI) I'm not the best choice for "sound" advice.
But just for fun I decided to see what choices my customers make when they choose a head unit. These numbers may not represent the entire S2000 population since I'm sure many systems are installed without a DCI (unthinkable!). But it's some interesting stuff anyway and I thought I'd share it.
Here's the percentages of DCI sales for 2005 broken out by DCI type (HU brand):
Alpine IR 40%
Sony Wired 16%
Pioneer IR 8%
Kenwood 8%
Alpine Wired 8%
Pioneer Wired 6%
JVC 5%
All others 9%
If you combine Alpine IR and Alpine wired you get a whopping 48% of all head units. That's amazing. I wonder if Alpine really has that kind of market share or if the numbers are skewed because S2000 owners tend to buy brands with certain features or price points?

I like Alpine because of the suspension materials used for the CD bay. The Alpine HU I got also had the fetaures I want and came IR ready at a good price (9847). Add to that with one of the first integrated the iPod adapters and good amps, and Alpine offered a complete solution to go with its good rep.
Also, it works great with the Modifry DCI - this is the real reason I got an Alpine HU.
