Phil, I think you're right. The noise problem may not start from the amp, but it ended up destroy the amp. He did two things at once, re-grounded the HU and moved the amp to an MDF board, and the noise was significantly reduced, but not totally eliminated. Then the last thing he'd done was replace the amp, and the noise is eliminated. This makes me thing that the amp was the problem from the begining.

Ajkweler, please list the changes by order of things you did, which steps you're done and the result of each step so that others will benefit from your experiences.

Oh hey guys, sorry midterms after spring break are killer. I just took my last midterm today. Well all I did so far was ground the the HU. Also like TR-S2k said, I placed the amp on top of a mdf board. The wiring was how I had it at first, with the power cable going down the passenger side, the rca's all down the driver side. I have the crossovers underneath the driver seat, so when I need to adjust them, I just pull back the seat and I have great access to them. There is simply no noise at all. Even if there is then I just can't hear it. I really have to get some dynomat for the trunk now as I play the music louder.

I do notice though that with a less powerful amp, I can't push the system to the limits. I actually had the amp pause for a few seconds when I was playing the volume a lot higher (top was down) Well, besides blasting the system that loud, I still have great clarity witht he sound while the top is down. I love these speakers, I'll probably end up getting the infinity 5 1/4 should I decide on getting spods. One thing's for sure thought if I go that route, I'm going to have to add another amp.

Once again thx for all the help, sorry it took so long to respond.

As for the amp pausing like that, I'm going to have a friend of mine, well its a friends friend who's supposed to be a pro take a look at it. Perhaps I'm tryin to pull too much juice out for the sub.

oh hey there guys, well the amp shuts off, roughly for 10-20 seconds. It only happens when I turn the volume pretty high, high enough where several cars away from me can also hear whatever weird music i'm listening to

Its still doing it, as for as wiring, I believe there aren't any flaws, probably just trying to squeeze too much power out of the amp. Once again, sorry for the long delayed replies, midterm week =/

naw, no problem on the delays...

let me get this straight --- turning up very loud... amp powers down, 10-20 sec later, powers up, lather, rinse, repeat?

if so -- here are some questions:
engine on or off?
how long is it running before powering off?
is the amp too hot to touch more more than a second or so?
(i forget) did you ever get a multi-meter? can you tell what the voltage is across the amp power to ground when playing (right before it happens)?

my suspicion is that you're drawing hard and the voltage is dipping close to 10 V, which will power down most amps.

Hey there again, well it will repeat, the amp will power down again should I continue to play music at that volume. As for powering off, it depends on the volume that I'm playing it at. If its louder then it will turn off sooner, if simply loud then it won't turn off or would take a lot longer to power down.

I tried to see what was happening in the trunk so I played with the volume using the remote, it would seem on that amp, the two led's for each channel would light up. As the volume is louder the led gets brighter. Should it be completely illuminated then the amp would power down. I'll try with the multimeter when I have some spare time.

Oh, btw the amp is not incrediblity hot, just regular hot as I've felt from every other amps I've used in the past.

VERY interesting...

the lights thing. which lights are you referring to? what are they labelled?

i'm going to re-read the manual... http://www.soundstream.com/sub/owner_manua...ub204404604.pdf

distortion/clipping lights? are these labeled 4 & 8 in the manual? is there silkscreening next to them labeled Ch 1 & 2 Clip or Ch 3 & 4 Clip?

do you have a digital camera you can use to take good pictures of the settings on the amp? and/or could you give me a detailed explanation of where things are set? use a clock face to approximate dial settings...

btw -- car running or no?

I'll take pix of them as soon as I get home later, still at school rite now and in lab. Car is running yes. THe lights that I'm referring to are the red led's that are located on the top panel of the amp. But then again I'll take some pix of it as soon as I have the chance later today.

sounds like a shutdown due to input clipping.

i'll look at where your input gains are set... chances are, they are too high.
