Default Information needed on upgrading stereo?

Hi Guys
Can anyone help? Fed up with not hearing my stereo at speed!!! I don,t want to go mad on upgrading, wondered if I just replaced the speakers in the doors would I get any benefit. Or do I need to change the unit and speakers. I don,t really want to spend

I think people generally upgrade just the headunit and they are really satisify with just that!

I think my stock stereo sounds good, at least for now =)

I had the same exact situation, I could barely hear anything on highway speeds, but I had an AP1, and the stock speakers are the worst. Yours, being a MY '04 should have pretty decent stock speakers, so replacing the headunit will instantly give you a much louder signal than the stock headunit.

Anything after that is sort of diminishing returns, in that, you have to spend a lot more to get any appreciable gain in loudness by replacing the speakers/adding an amp etc. However, you'll need an amp if you want to add a sub...but you'll also be sacrificing some space. I sacrificed the wheel well/toolbox area.

The feedback was useful going to upgrade both the head and speaker with the new Alpina cda 9887 and spx pro speakers (new model just released)

Thanks again
