Stock speakers on '00.
Does anybody know the power rating for the stock speakers on a '00. I am just looking to increase the volume so I can actually hear the radio when I have the top down. I'm also trying to be the most cost efficient, so I'm looking at just adding an amp to the 2 existing speakers and hopefully that will do for now. However, before I commit to this I was wondering if anyone knew the specs on these speakers. They actually don't sound that bad, they just sound under-powered. So I'm hoping just the amp will work. Any info? Thanks, guys.
I had and still have the same opinion as you regarding the stock speakers. I can't tell you what they are rated at but those would be just numbers that don't mean anything to me. It's what you hear in the real world that counts. Like you, I wanted a lot more volume (with clarity) when top down at speed. I first went with simple Sony 1621's as a replacement in the doors. Then I found out that our head unit is only using 1/2 of the output wattage available to it. The other 1/2 was pumping out the rear outputs, of which we have none. So I used the stock speakers and put them in the rear panels (see Lucid's rear speaker panel mod). I did all the cutting, mounting and wiring myself. I got the wiring harness adaptor from Lucid so I could easily splice into the back of the HU without fuss. I gotta tell ya, this was all I needed. Doubling the wattage for sound out of 4 speakers made all the difference in the world for me. No amp required. Of course, some people just gotta have more but for me, this does it.
The stock speakers are worthless. You will never get clean sound out of them. Even a $40 pair of aftermarket speakers will be much better.
Given that - I have a 2000W system in my S2K. It takes quite a bit of volume to hear it at highway speeds open. I would make sure you have at least 40W/ch clean.

You mean stock "speakers". Those things are made of cardboard and tissue paper. I don't think they can handle any power without distorting.
If you do only one thing to your S2000 audio system, replace the "speakers" with something real. You don't have to spend much, and it's pretty easy to do yourself.

I spoke to my local car audio shop and was prepared to spend a bunch. They just recommended a "starter set" of an aux amp and a couple of "decent" front speakers. Total cost - around $200 installed. Since my S2K is new they also advised that I wait a month or so to be sure what I wanted. I'll let you know how it turns out.
