So I've finally found my final location for my iPhone in the S, I've gone and installed a modifry dash mount (Thanks Bob for the super fast shipping!), adapted a slip in case for the iPhone 3G, and used some velcro to make a fairly clean looking mount.

I think it looks reasonably clean in person... hopefully you do too? It's at the perfect eye level, I can glance over at directions or see who is calling me without taking my eyes off the road.







The only negative I've found so far is that first reached too far in and my knuckle lightly touched the iPod cable. I've solved this by moving it up a couple mm higher. Might get a lower shift knob too. Now if only Alpine head units provided +5 to the USB ports instead of +12 to the firewire :\
