Default iPhone Integration Impossible?

I recently purchased a whole new "system" (DCI and all) and was told by Crutchfield that the Kenwood KDC-MP538U would allow me to connect my iphone and I could control my music from it. Well, wrong, it works with ALL other iPods, my old 4th gen, video and iTouch. It charges but other than that, nothing. This head unit also has a USB connection and it plugs right into the iPhone, charges and takes control. But for obvious reasons I don't want to use the headunit to nav for aritsts, songs, etc... Have also tried a 3G iphone in hopes I would HAVE to upgrade, but it does even charge.

My question is do any of you guys have a good aftermarket HU with a iPhone attached and are able to select your music through the phone? Maybe you have seen someone with this? If so you are better than crutchfeild!

Got 30 days to return and hopefully modifry is willing to exchange if need be. So what ya got?

From what I've read the Alpine CDA's seem to work well with the iPhone. However, the IDA's (at least the IDA-X001) seems to have trouble.

By work well you mean I can use the iPhone to select my music and it doesn't take control of it?

The norm now with aftermarket headunits is that they take control of the ipod. You can select your music that's on the ipod through the headunit. I don't want this. I want to use my iphone to select my music, I don't even want to have to look at my radio. With the radio being in such an awkward spot I thought there may be others doing this. Plus the iphone music navigation is way better than any headunit.

Is anyone here currently able to do this with an aftermarket HU and an iphone?

Ah, I understand now.

Sorry, I don't have any experience with that. I have used two different interfaces for iPods to HUs, and both "took control" of the iPod. I am able to use playlists to control my music selection, and then forward/back work. However, finding a specific song doesn't work well.

Sounds like you want to use a straight aux-in then.

well then pick a feature your willing to lose. I have an IDA-x100 and I like it better for surfing music than the I-phone while driving.
