Default IPod installation

Plan on installing a new head unit in my 2003 S-2000 then, new speakers. Love my new IPod and am perplexed "how to" use it with the factory standard head unit and my contemplated purchase of a new head unit. Are there any "simple" tricks for the unhandy among us? Are there any attractive mounts available for the Ipod versus leaving it rest on the passenger's seat?

Appreciate any hints.

HON-AUX. Order one and you'll have no regrets.

It plugs into the factory CD-changer input on the back of the head unit and allows a line-in when the deck is set to "CD Changer".

Then after the HON-AUX, install a power adaptor (cigarette lighter) into the front of your car and mount either the RCA jacks or an 1/8" jack into the kick panel next to the stereo so you can easily connect your device.

I bought a new head unit with AUX in, and ran the input cable down the center tunnel (under the carpet), and ran a wire with jack through the back of the 'glove box'.

It's a little dark in there, but if you look closely you can see the rubber grommit I put into the back wall of the glove box to run the AUX input wire through.

You can also see Modifry's Glove Box Organizer , which really helps you store several things without them all piling up and bumping into each other.

I just installed the PIE adapter for my iPod. I've never worked on a car stereo, so thanx to Macgyver, InsaneInNC and ruepx67 for advice on how to pull out the head unit.
The instructions that came with the kit were very clear, and even with no experience, the whole thing took less than 30 minutes, including disconnecting/reconnecting the battery. Make sure you follow the instructions re: the groundwire. I just wrapped it around one of the mounting screws for the HU, and there's no ground noise.
It sounds pretty good. I just ran the cable along the driver's side of the tunnel, and the iPod sits nicely in the change tray behind the cupholder. If it gets in my way, I'll think about installing some kind of pedestal or mount.
Logjam Electronics got the kit to me in 5 days, as promised, and the transaction was done easily online.

Many thanks for "getting back" relative to the IPod installation. Question...what is HON-AUX and where do I get one?

The HON-AUX is an interface cable, made by PIE (that's the company, Precision Interface Electronics). It plugs into the 14 pin jack on the back of the stereo, originally for a remote cd changer, and changes it into an AUX input for an MP3 player, satellite radio, or other portable audio device.
I got mine from Logjam electronics, which I think is either logjam.com or logjamelectronics.com. The HON-AUX terminates in RCA plugs. You'll also need an RCA to miniplug adapter for the iPod or other portable device. They sell one for $24.95, but I'm sure I could have gotten it much cheaper at Radio Shack. BUT the one they sell is nice and long, in case you want to install the iPod in the glove box or someplace. It actually worked out pretty well-my wife can grab the iPod from the passenger seat and pick the tunes while I carve up Mulholland Drive.

Didn't someone do an iPOD install on the door of the center console? I remember seeing it, and thinking how nice it was. Also made me think of mounting a Pocket PC their. Does anyone else remember this install and possible pics of it? Had a leather holder and the wires went into the hinge of the door.

Special "thank you" to bduel ....

My questions relating to HON-AUX have been answered. Scary!!! I'm thinking I just might surprise myself and enjoy music from my IPod in the S2K. If successful, I might even subscribe to Popular Electronics (just kidding) Thanks again.
