John , you are on the right path for figuring out your problem. If you disconnect the speaker wires and the problem goes away then you either have a pinched speaker lead or you burnt the coils in you speakers. If not the amp will need repair.

If its just a bad wire and you correct the problem next is to adjust your amp properly.

1. start by turning the gain all the way down.

2. set the crossover on the amp to highpass

3. if you have control of the freqency point set it to about 50hz if you are not running any subs . If you are running subs set to about 100hz as you will beable to get more gain out of them.

4. make sure the loudness is off on you deck and set the bass and treble to zero (flat)

5.now with the gain on the amp all the way down turn your radio up to about 3/4 of max volume .( anything after 3/4 is ussualy not a clean signal and will cause clipping )

6. now start turning the gain on the amp up till you start hearing audible distortion , then gain it back just a hair.

hope this helps you out .

Scott

Scott - Thank you - that's exactly what I have been looking for. Now i'm just hoping i haven't burnt the coils on the speakers after having them for an hour or so. I'm hoping not since the amp only puts out 110w (Rated anyway, who knows what the actual is...)i did hear the speakers kind of bottom out/pop a couple times when trying to tune it before with the deck controls (bass/treble)...willing to take any bets on what the chances of me burning a coil up would be?

Based on what you said, its impossible that you have burned your coils. Dont fret. If the amp goes into protect mode, there is no way the power was delivered.

Looks like bad news...

Power Wire: Good.
Ground: Good.
Speaker wires: Good.
Remote wire: Good.

Amp with speaker wires removed: still in protect mode.

I bought this from Millionbuy. Does anyone know how they are with returns?

Here's what i found with the multimeter:

With the car off:

Power lead on the amp, to the ground lead on the amp: 13.3v, 0 Ohms.

Remote Lead on the amp to the Ground lead on the amp .1mv 9.1k ohms (i'm assuming it's going through the deck to get that.

With the Car On:

Power Lead on the Amp to the Ground lead on the amp: 14.27 V, 0 ohms
Remote lead on the amp to ground lead on the amp, 14.05 V, 0 ohms.

Speaker wire unplugged, 4.2 ohms per cable.

4.2 ohms Kappas should be alright ,Hopefully you got a bum amp. Warranty should not be a problem.

Mcomer , sorry if I come across harsh sometimes. There is just to much mis information on the boards lately .I wish I had more time to post ,to be able to help more. But after 60hr a week at my shop then another 20 at tbalon's shop helping other members with their mis dealings with other shops doesn't leave much time. NFR seems to be good with audio but sometimes he gets ahead of himself .Wrong info doesn't help anyone .I just wish people would read more carefully before they post. This is not to be taken as a attack on any certain member but for all members who post info not pertaining to the facts given. Hope everyone sees my point .NFR no hard feelings ,we should be able to work together to help other out .But to anyone that post misleading info to the question at hand and I come across it don't be surprised if I jump in.

John good luck with your return. Let me know if you get everything working ok.
