Kenwood KDC-BT948HD
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_113BT94...=detailed_info
I've been looking at HUs that are half the price but I really like the look of this unit. Does anyone else have this one? I know it will work with modifrys DCI. Pretty sure the radio door with be able to close over this unit right?
edit: also, will I need to use the crossover that comes with the Polk speakers I am purchasing or will the one built in the HU be enough? I am just upgrading stock components and not adding a subwoofer or amp.

I almost bought the Excelon version of that (w/ 2 yr. warranty, just a little bit more). You can't beat Kenwood's feature set at any price, that's not debatable. Here's what made me re-consider and go w/ the Sony DSX-300 instead:
- Display is supposed to be unreadable in sunlight, not good in a convertible
- User interface leaves a bit to be desired from my perspective
- Kenwood HU quality seems hit or miss, anecdotally worse than the other major brand competition.
You would still use your speaker's crossovers w/ this unit, you need appropriate high and low pass filters to go active.
It does not support BT music streaming.

I work for a Kenwood dealer and just put in a 995 myself. Bluetooth audio streaming will be back in the 2012 lineup but not 2011. They are great head units and I would recommend them over the other Alpine/Pioneer I install. Any decent set of components will sound better off a amp but at lower volumes my Hertz ECX's sound great off deck power. I might be able to get you a better deal through my shop than Crutchfield on a new unit. Also can send you the PAC steering wheel control module. Pm me if you nbeed more help.
dude nice. appreciate all the help guys. just got back from a 6 day trip through yellowstone and mount. teton. i am going to spend some time tonight looking at other HU's in the $300 price range but right now the Kenwood i posted is still my first choice. i want something that has a clean simple look to it that blends well with the rest of the cars styling...and that you can customize the display colors to match the dash colors.

I've had the Kenwood BT948HD installed and while I love the unit, I can't see the display during the day. Not just with direct sunlight, but during the day at all. Adding color only reduces the amount of light that it emits. I'm played with the contract and all the other illumination buttons but to now avail. I'm thinking that it must be wired wrong or there is a firmware update that will fix this. The display on my unit does not resemble the display on the box it came in. Hoping someone can help with this.
