Do a search for "phatnoise", and you'll get a bunch of opinions. I have heard boot up time is a little slow.

I've never tried it, however I saw it at the local Tweeter audio store. It looks like a small amp. I'll see if the display model's working or not when I go back on Monday.

I have one, I ordered it before they were out after checking out the new kenwood catalog that my local Tweeter got after CES. I've had it 2 weeks now and I love it. Yeah, sometimes the boot time is slow, but hey it's a hard drive that has to spin up and then load the linux OS off the disk. If you are used to letting your car sit for a few secs to warm up, this probably won't bother you. Loading the playlists/songs is smoking fast once it is running.

2500 songs is probably 96kbps audio, which sucks. I've been encoding stuff at 320, 256, 192, and 192 VBR to see which one I like since I have a clean amp and speakers (JL 300/4 and BA Pro 6.5). 320 sounds great, but eats up a lot of space. It's between 256 and 192 VBR right now.

I don't want to start the MP3 vs. WMA argument here (it's well-documented other places), but 64k WMA is frequently compared to 128k MP3. I rip the former, and am more than satisfied with the quality on my home stereo. (I haven't bought a keg yet.)

You should also check out Sony's MEX1HD. I'm thinking of both units and i'm leaning towards the Sony because it's all in the head unit. One of the features I like about it is that if someone has a cd i like, your able to record the cd onto the hdd on the unit.

I am well aware of the specifics of WMA and bought the music keg because it did MP3 AND WMA, I was going to wait and get the 959 WMA/MP3 player for the WMA ability if the music keg hadn't released.

But on the clean system I have in my car now, 160kbps WMA does not sound as good as 256 or 320 MP3. I wish I could do WMA, but for now I'm not going to. Maybe if a higher bitrate was available later. The clarity on the high notes is just not there when I crank it up.

Several people have sent me PMs for pictures, here they are. That is a JL 300/4 amp in case you are wondering (4 channel so I can add a sub later). Doesn't take up much room at all (2" of depth) and all the cabling is hidden. Also, if you do this you will need to do something like add a fabric loop so you can take out the toolkit cover. I'm very happy with the location, I've always put this big duffle bag in the well and it still fits. I just did the NC Outer Banks Run trip with a full trunk and had no problems.

The keg is easy to mount and it only has one cable that connects (from your headunit). It will not fit in the secret compartment or under the seat (without modification).

Just a word of advice: Stay away from any digital players that use Sony's very crappy ATRAC system. I have first hand experience with one of their personal MP3 players and will never EVER buy another digital music product from them.

1) The system is a PITA to use, requiring file conversion from MP3 or other forms.

2) The sound quality is absolutely ATROCIOUS. Pathetic even. Even recorded at the max bit rate, the ATRAC compression algorithm introduces TONS of atrifacts into your music. Like really nasty, noticeable distortions on percussion instruments, pops and crackles, etc. In short, it is just awful.

Take my advice and stay away from ATRAC. It's total crap. The new Pioneer HD headunit uses ATRAC as well, so stay away from that one as well.
