Default Limiting wind noise on windscreen mounted videocam

daktruckie99's post reminded me I need to try and figure out a solution before heading to the Dragon next week.

I have Modifry's windscreen mount that puts the camera beetween the roll hoops. Using a Sony handycam with build in stereo mic, but no option for external. Anyone have any tricks for limiting wind noise, even at the expense of sound volume/clarity?

My camera has automatic volume attenuation for when it sees wind noise, so once I get out of first gear, you can't hear anything anymore.

Thoughts I've had:
- thin tape over mic (scotch)
- thick tape over mic (duct)
- foam over mic (sponge or eggshell for example)

Would love to hear some ideas on this... the sound makes the video!

I'd go with packing tape. Give it a test drive around the neighborhood, see how it works out?

Scotch tape probably won't hold well enough, and duct tape might leave residue (besides really muffle the audio).

Foam might be the best bet though (if you can find a way to hold the foam in place when at speed)

Good luck

Was thinking glue some duct tape to the foam, and tape to sides of camera. A little residue could be removed with alcohol if necessary, and it would hold a lot better.

I should just test it out like you say, but I'm lazy and it's rainy for the next 3 days Hoping someone has already been down this path.

Fair enough.

Might try aluminum tape as well . Duct tape gets nasty after a while...

I've already tried foam and tape, no luck. Hence my post about using the external mic

Sucks doesn't it?

Did a little internet research, and it sounds like we need a dead cat. Luckily that's not exactly what it sounds like...

Time to find some fake fur. One comment to note in his page: "I'd experiment with other furs to see which provides the most wind resistance, although my hunch is that the longer and finer the fur, the better because there would be more places for the wind to get trapped."

Unfortunately for those of us with built-in mic's, we may be out of luck. Still going to test a few tapes and foam, just to see for myself.

Going to hit up the local hair salons for their clippings?

On another note...

When I did NH_S2K_Guy's install last week, I ran the power cabling down the passenger side. Much simpler install than mine

(For what it's worth, I had to run my RCAs down the passenger side so I couldn't do my install any other way, they're too thick to fit in the center console - Monster 400 FTW/FTL )
