low profile subs
A friend of mine had 3 of the pioneer shallow 12s in his truck way back when the first came out. It pounded pretty good.
Thing is they still need a "normal" amount of air space, just that you can make the box shallower but have to make it up in length/width.
iv been wanting to play with Earthquakes shallow subs, they're ugly but i like there specs

The best shallow subs Ive heard so far where the Kenwood Excelons, but they blow easy. Pioneers are a close second. JL has there shallow which crushes them all, but its a 13" only. Ive dealt with Earthquake years ago and they where horrible. Probox used to use them in there truck enclosures.
If you can get away with a normal sized sub, definitely use it. Normal subs always sound better and can play deeper.

^Iagree....They are great for shallow depth situations, but like anything there is compromise.
I modeled several against a simple Alpine Type E with WinISD and they had less performance...size for size.

The Kewwood did better than its peers.
