I have one with my Kenwood KDC-MP4028. It uses the IR. It's great!
It adds additional features that the stock controls don't have, and it adds speed compensating volume.
What you want to do when you get a new headunit is get the adapter harness. That way you don't have to cut additional wires. Just splice the head-unit and DCI wiring into the adapter and plug it all in.
My other suggestion to you is go to http://www.modifry.com/products/dci/index.htm and click on the DCI there and read the FAQ and manual so you know how it works.

thanks guys! i was wondering if you could tell me how your set up compairs to the stock radio and speakers. and if you had to replace the cd changer in the back... i realize that more then likely i will have to but i was just wondering if someone found some way to use it... kinda sucks to just toss it.
the stock system sucks. bad. anything is an improvement.
I took out my changer...the fact my radio does MP3 on CD makes up for that, though. I have about the equivalent of 10 discs on one CD.
I don't know if there is any way to keep the changer, but it MIGHT be able to be used with an Alpine Ai-Net head unit...maybe.

the reason my dad said that was because in my 1990 acura legend i replaced the HU and i lost the alarm with it so he just wanted me to ask others who had done it befor.
