I bought the JVC at xtremeshopper.... I've been using it for >3 weeks now with no problems. I have no idea how their customer service is, I ordered it it came (3 weeks after I ordered it, it was not in production yet, no one had them). I've heard some bad stories about them on the mp3 boards, but it worked out for me, its like a crap shoot .

If you want the best service around try www.crutchfield.com. I built my entire audio system from them when I was in high school. I lived less then a mile from their outlet and retail stores so I tried everything out before keeping it, was truly great cause I often found that cheaper speakers sounded better in my car.

Here is the best method to try everything out....
Buy the most expensive item first!
Now everytime you return something they give you credit . Just keep going down the price list ordering the next most expensive item .

I don't think they like this too much, but they were always cheerfull and took my stuff back. Heck they saw my face everyday for like 2 years.

I was thinking of getting the Clarion unit - dxz815mp (in large part due to the fact that I can get a big discount through a friend). Does anyone out there have this unit?

I also recommend the Kenwood 8017. Relatively inexpensive, does the job very well, and it doesn't attract as much attention from would-be thieves.

I am also considering the Kenwood 8017. For those of you that own it, what is your current speaker/amp setup? Are you using Pinky's mod?

Thanks!

I have read a lot about the PAC unit lately, but I think I am leaning towards Pinky's mod. Other than price, is there any other reason to consider the PAC?

Since the PAC and Pinky's mod are the same thing... Price is the only reason to go with the PAC. Pinky's mod comes with support from Pinky and is pre wired... So, it saves you about 20 minutes (what it took me to do the wiring and soldering). But I got the whole thing done for about $50 and that includes buying the soldering iron .

I guess I am not that familiar with Pinky's mod. Does it also require that an IR sensor be mounted inside the head unit's door in order for the dash controls to work with it closed?

I've seen a couple of threads discussing the Alpine CDA-7878. It's features/specs are impressive. It doesn't appear to be available yet though. I like everything about the JVC SH-99 except its appearance (definintely prefer black).

Hey check out the Alpine CDA-7878 head unit. It looks like a heck of a unit:

MP3
sat. radio ready
Bass Pro
Versa Link
4 X 45
3 pairs of 4v preouts
blackout

Looks like Alpine finally updated their website with the specs and the price. List is $850, so retail might be around $650-$700. It's a great looking unit, too.

The release date has been pushed back a few times since May, but Ralph at sales@the-substation.com says the the new release date is August 8!

Here's the Alpine link with pic & specs.
