Need Help: Do I need to upgrade my amp?
I have a Eclipse 3640 4 Channel Amp on which I plan on powering 2 infinity Kappa 5.1's and 2 infinity Kappa 6.1's. I know that the RMS power rating for each speaker is 100watts and from reading the eclipse catolouge, it states that my amp is rated at 420watts Max but the specs for the amp does not show 420watts.
Specs for eclipse 3640:
4 channels
60W x 4 at 2ohms
40W x 4 at 4ohms
120W x2 at 4ohms bridged
Is my amp going to supply enough power to the infinity's?? Does this amp really make 420watts? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

There's two ways of quoting power when it comes to amps - peak/max power and RMS power. RMS power is the real power the amp makes and the one to judge by. Most amps come with testing certificates and they always will make a little above the quoted RMS power.
In answer to your question 60w RMS is adequate for powering the Eclipses but not mind-blowing. Seeing as though you have the amp you may as well try it and see how you go..

I would recommend that you get rid of this amp (sell it ) and get a new one. Most people including myself that have Kappas have a 125x2 amp (125 per speaker).
Infinity states that 50wrms is a MINIMUM and your amp is 60 MAXIMUM. THat means your amp will always be maxed out, and that is never good for the life of an amp. Get a Van Gogh on ebay for 370 bucks 500.4, and thatll take care of all your power needs.

Thanks for the replies guys. What are you opinions on the Soundstream EGA4220? What's main difference between this amp and the Van Gogh? I have a Rubicon 500-1 for my sub and it would actually be nice having another soundstream for my componets too. Looks like it's goodbye for the weak ol' eclipse!

The rubicons are pretty good, (they are fine for bass because subs arent really that sensitive to amps, power is power) but for highs, you can tell. Its not bad at all, but the Van Gogh is just better. Spend a little more now, and reap the benefits later.
