what i like is the fact that you can put in an artist's name and when the song appears anywhere on the x/m channels it will let you switch over

Kind of like music on demand

hi i was just reading the specs on crutchfield and the alpine HU cda-9855 doesn't have random file play? is this correct?

No. All of the MP3 players have random play. You can select random play from the tracks in the current folder/on the current CD or random across all folders/across all CDs. Alpine call it 'Mix' play, so it may be listed differently.
