New Speakers
I did exactly what you're talking about, I only replaced the stock door speakers. I dropped in some Kenwood 3 ways, got them for about $100 from Lucid. While I do notice an improvement, it's not as drastic as I hoped for. Next I think I might be putting in some rear speakers to help. I hear they make a major difference, and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I'd suggest improving the door speakers first, and if that's enough for you, then cool, if not, go with the rears....
I also did the same, I replaced the door speakers with a pair of rockford fosgate 6 1/2's full rage (Not the greatest but I got them dirt cheap). Definitley helped the highs, but lost some of the bass.
My feeling is that it isn't more speakers, but more power that should make it sound better. I'm going to replace the OEM headunit with an MP3 player (50W x 4ch) that has more power. If that doesn't do it then I'm going to talk to Lucid and others about which speakers to put in the rear to up the bass a bit.
