The factory stereo only has 4 sets of outputs, and the wiring harness that plugs into it has 4 sets of wires, 1 for each door, and one for each side in the rear.

So... any aftermarket head unit with 4 outputs (pretty much all of them)will work.
I always ran my tweeters with their own channel output with an amplifier

I don't recall seeing any external crossovers in my car... although I'm pretty sure there was a capacitor soldered to the tweeter to block the lower frequencies.

Maybe the individual drivers, when wired in parallel, combine to yield a 4 ohm load. Then they could be connected to one output from the head unit with no issues.

True but what I meant was that the crossover wasn't external, i.e. a separate unit not mounted to the speaker itself

Yes.

Hey I'm New: What are you using for the rear tweeters? Make sure you get tweeters that together will pull a 4ohm load. I determined how the rears were wired (series or parallel) but I've forgotten by now, I posted it in one of the 06 headrest speakers threads though. Not many speakers will fit back there, and if you aren't going to setup a full system, I'm not sure how much (if any) benefit you'll see, but then I hate lots of highs a couple of inches from my head anyways.
