Default OBDII scanner using your phone

I have been using this system for the past 3-4 years, it worked great for data logging my WRX and now my AP2 and C5Z.

The app I use is called Torque Pro https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...l.torque&hl=en It works great on my GS4 and was only $5. Unfortunately, I think the price is a lot higher for IOS.

This is the scanner I use. I purchased it on ebay about 4 years ago, for less than $20. I hear it's hit and miss with the quality of these cheap scanners, but so far I have been lucky.

Below are some parameters the app will display, the green are available and the dark gray/black are not.(these will depend on your ECU and what it reads) I am not sure if this works with OBDI but I assume it does. My car was off when I took the screen shots, thus the low values.

This is great tool for reading and clearing codes, and obtaining valuable real time engine data. THIS WILL NOT TUNE YOUR CAR.

It's really easy to setup and use, if anyone has questions. I will add a "how to" part.

Thanks!

What's "this sort of thing"? The smartphone in the video? Wouldn't that be the same sort of thing?

I believe he's talking about using the smartphone app to log data, which can then be overlaid onto driving footage. Something similar to this:

Yeah, that is very similar to this app. As far as I know, it will not display the track layout. What it will do though, is track your GPS position and speed.

Here is an example of what I mean.

To clarify:

I used Torque to data log the OBD2 and GPS Data (it also has a video recording feature if you want to use that but I prefer to use my camcorder), and you can use RaceRender to combine the video and data together to produce the video shown.

I've also used Torque to identify CEL codes on other members' cars - it's a great tool.

Is there a noticeable lag?

My friend used Torque with a similar bluetooth OBDII sender unit and there was too much lag to use the data in realtime. You'd press the accelerator down and RPMs would climb like 1-2 seconds later.

Mine logs data at about 1Hz, so there can be a delay. Whether a faster OBDII box would improve this, I don't know, it may be a limitation of the car.
