Default OEM Remote

Looked in the FAQ section and I did not see the answer to my question.

I once owned a 96 Civic that I had replaced the OEM radio. After doing this I had lost all of the remote keyless entry functions.

Will this be the case if I replace the S2000 OEM HU?

Oh and as a side note that shouldn't have happened in the Civic either

Thanks for the response. It happened in the Civic and I was warned it would before proceeding. I was told that the OEM HU on the Civic was used as the receiver / controller through the antenna. Civic is long gone now.

Yeah, but it depends on how you do the install.

I'm not sure in Honda did this on any other vehicles, but I know for sure that the '96-'98 Civic head unit served the receiver for the remote entry.

When I bought my '98 EX used, it did not have a tape deck (as it was an optional accessory), and the volume control wasn't even working (I knew this before I bought the car, but didn't care as it was still under warranty).

In looking to replace the HU, I found in the owner's manual that I'd lose the remote entry. One installer suggested that I "just wrap the OEM HU in bubble wrap" and install it behind the dash with only the power hooked up. While I have since learned that many people have done just that, I felt that was just ridiculous.

In the end, I got the OEM HU replaced under warranty (for the volume control) and bought an Alpine 6-CD changer for not a lot of dough (wasn't interested in going any further as I bought the car for its economical attributes ).

BTW, I still have the Civic. Just not worth selling it. It's cheap to operate and maintain and is no worries in places like the grocery store parking lot (damn runaway carts).
