this is slighty off topic but relevant, how much power is loud enough with the top down?

That depends on the speakers and HU you pick.

I run 4x65W to my door speakers and it's plenty loud enough with the top down.

I have the next step down from the K3P's. You shouldn't need rear speakers but you will want a sub. Bass is not Focal's strong point. But, with enough clean power, they sound fine top-down on-the-move. I found in-door tweeter mounting was a pain and I probably don't have them angled just right.

So I just got through my road trip and I'm back to piecing a system together again.

After visiting a couple shops and talking with a couple people here, I plan on getting:

HU: IDA-x100
Amp: PDX4.150
Speakers: Focal 165 KRX2
Sub: 10W6 (wlaurent side enclosure)

I plan on just bridging the other two channels to power the sub. Do you think the amp will be sufficient enough to do the KRX2's and the sub? I wanted something that could be out of site so the PDX would fit right under the driver seat.

Instead of going through a shop, I plan on just getting it all online like some of you guys suggested. Looks to be hundereds cheaper in fact. What do you guys think?

I would steer away from Alpine. But that's a personal preference due to my experience with Alpine products.

Focal door speakers looks great.

As for a sub, my belief is that anything less than a 12" just isn't going to really cover the low end properly. You'd be surprised how much space you still have with a 12" in a WLAURENT tool well enclosure.

Again, personal preferences based on many years of different setups (including multiple Alpine HUs and 10" and 12" subwoofers)

Alright I got the speakers on order and about to order the HU and amp online. Is there a downside to getting the HU and amp online besides warranty issues? I mean, are there knock-off Alpine HU's and amps?

One more thing. I want to use the dash controls so I'm gonna get the DCI, can someone tell me why someone would get the IR DCI? My past HU's all came with remotes. Is the IR DCI for systems that don't have remotes?

As for sub. I really would like a 12" sub and put it in the tool well, but then I wouldn't be able to put anything on top of it possibly damaging it which is why I want the side enclosure instead. Does anybody lay anything on the floor of the trunk? (those with subs in the toolwell)

Just to add.. I was thinking of getting the Japanese IDA-x100 (to use the radio). I haven't played with the x100, but is the language changeable/programable? (so i can use english menu on the jdm alpine HU).

I've seen people use a couple 2x4's cut to length to fit over the well. I've also seen a carpeted lid made. There are a few options...

I haven't gotten around to making a cover...some day, lol

JL subs have factory covers. what I had before. It look very clean and you dont' have to worry about damaging the sub with junk in the trunk.

number of online stores also carry standard covers as well.

I would listen to the PDX amps first before going with it. it is a digital amp and some have stated they do not like the sound quality, I myself have not listened to it but not something I would take a chance on.

not that it would make a huge difference for a convertible.

I initially wanted to go with 2 channel McIntosh, something I would keep for a long time.. but couldn't pass up the deal on Arc Audio FD series 4 channel.

I think radio frequencies are a bit different?
