Default port hole for a sub box?

So, i know that a port hole is good for a sub box...but it seems contrasting to keeping the box air tight...
In some of the how-to threads ive been reading, says if you are going to use wire terminals, make sure you seal aroudn the edges so no air can escape. But, then put a huge hole in front of the box so all the air can escape????
Whats the difference?

you really have to know what you're doing before you just cut a hole in your box. first you have to know which freq you want to port to and then you have to calculate how long, wide the port should be to achieve that freq.

My experience is that a ported box will not work as well in this car as a sealed box. Ported is good for SQL, where a sealed box is generally better for all-around SPL.
