I am constantly changing my setup. recently i moved to an active setup, then a few month later changed my amp. I have to say I'm finally VERY VERY happy with the setup and thought I would share for those who are considering what to run.
My advice- don't by standard off the shelf speakers. I'm running seas aluminum tweeters with type x alpine woofers (in an active setup you do not need the xover that is included in components)
I'm running an alpine pdx 4.100 amp, and then have the xover controls on the HU. PRS880 which you can get on ebay used right now for $280.
I'm probably going to add a sub to get the lower levels. I had one in the car before and removed it. Basically though for a small amount of cash you can put together a great sounding system.

an active setup is definitely great, when i made the switch the difference was night and day. you can adjust every little thing on the fly, i could adjust the tweeter to where its almost piercing and the sub to only hit the really low lows where it makes your hair tingle. the pioneer p880prs is fantastic affordable head unit that has all the controls you need to run full active, which is what i also use in my 240sx. i just started installing the sound system for my s2k and ill be running full active as well.
