Question on ease of installation

Question on ease of installation
I've been thinking about upgrading the stock unit in my 2000 S2000 and
going with something that I can add on Sirius radio. So, Ive been looking at
Crutchfield to get an idea of what's available. On every radio on their site is
a warning message that modifications to the car will be required to install the unit
on the S2000. They mention cutting, fabricating brackets, etc. and also the
possibility that you will not be able to revert back to a stock appearance.
Is this just covering their a...?
Just how easy is it to install something like a Pioneer 7700 unit? Plug and Play? Modifying the wiring is something I'm willing to do. Cutting up the dash and making brackets is not.
Thanks for any info.

pretty much any single DIN system will work, provided that if it has a slide / swing face, that the face doesnt dip below the bottom of the radio. Some pioneers and kenwoods do not fit because of this. The Alpines do fit, because when the face opens, it slides out and down, instead of more down. None of the TILT functions on any radio will work with the door up, though.
Check out the Alpine 9851. They can be had on eBay for around $200, and they are XM / Sirius ready.

yeah crutchfield almost makes it sound like you'll need a sawzall and drill press to adapt any radio but it isnt true. follow the guidelines that the others here have given you and you'll have zero issues with fitment. i just installed a jvc arsenal 7500 and it was a plug and play unit, no problems whatsoever. like mentioned though, the tilt function does not work when the door cover is up.
i was actually quite surprised with how easy the majority of my install went (amp, components, HU, wiring etc). pulling 4 guage wire through the firewall grommet was a cinch as was pulling a pair of 16 guage wires through each door. matter of factly my biggest snag has been getting my hands on a positive battery terminal that will accept the stock power leads and an additional 4 guage lead (just ordered a stinger pro digital though so that will be solved).

I bought the Alpine 9851 and went to Lucid Automotiver's site and bought the Alpine hard-wired controls, the S2000 wiring harness, and the mute relay. I did not have to cut a single wire. Everything was simple and easy. The best thing is that I could go back to stock in 15 minutes if I need to.

yeah, i'm surprised they'd even suggest modifications are needed. the S is one of the easier HU installs i've done. very simple to pop out the radio door, and everything just screws in like a typical single DIN.
