Default Roll hoop vs headrest speakers OEM

I've seen 2 kinds of OEM s2000 seat speakers...the little baby ones where there are 2 tiny speakers in the roll hoop plastic...and then a bigger one where there is a single larger speaker in the headrest area.

What years were these produced as factory options, and were both systems available at the same time, or was one an update over the other?

Just curious as I can't seem to find any definite information on these.

Roll hoop speakers were on the 06-09 only.

The other ones (box in the headrest) were an OEM accessory add-on that started in 02 or 03 but didn’t last long as an option as the seats changed in 06. The part # for the seat speakers is 08A54-S2A-100

I got the headrest speakers for me first year car when they came out. They make a big difference compared to the door speakers by themselves.

My understanding is the 06-09's had a wire harness for the roll hoop speakers ready to go...where all other models had zero wiring. How would a dealer install of the headrest speaker have gone on a 02-03 for example? Did they have a breakout cable for the stereo and require removing lots of interior trim to run the cable to the head unit?

06-09 the roll hoop speakers were standard, not an optional extra.

The AP1 and AP2 until 2005 only the headrest (grey box) was an option. Headrest speaker box thing isn't compatible with the 06-09 as they don't have the holes in the seatbacks so they made the roll hoop speakers standard.

The roll hoop speaker is the first picture in your post (AP2 06-09) the second picture is the pre-06-09 (headrest) speaker that was an option/extra. 02+ had an output on the factory radio for rear speakers, prior to that it wasn't possible to add the headrest speaker. The center console and quite a bit of interior trim pieces had to be removed to run the wires, plus the seats had to be taken apart as well. Not a 10 minute install, and since it was a dealer installed accessory most opted to not get them as I'd guess it was pricey to add them. Pretty sure it was $400 just for the speaker boxes back then, plus installation.

The seat design changed in 2006, that's when the headrest speaker stopped being offered and the roll hoop speakers were installed as standard.

Just to add a little more detail on the accessory headrest speakers (P/N 08A54-S2A-100):
The '02-'05 cars had pigtails under the dash with the rear speaker outs from the headunit. The headrest speakers came with a wiring harness that the installer would run under the carpet along the sills to connect to the underdash pigtails. Yes, the official factory instructions called for removal of the seats to install.
Earlier cars had no pigtails, and in fact the connector to the headunit did not even have wires for the rear channels of the headunit, but the headunit itself did have outputs for for the rear channels. Honda apparently did supply a kit to add the pigtails to the headunit connector on early cars, but I've never found a part number for it. It is easy though to add pins/wires to the connector yourself by swapping them from an aftermarket "reverse harness" such as a

Happy Saturday morning!

I was so willing to assert there were no headrest or roll hoop speakers in my 2006 car I walked down to the garage, squeezed into the car and looked. No speakers! Not a sign on them. Dropped the roof and pulled into the driveway, looked again, and *** Poof *** they magically appeared! In the roll hoops just like shown in Photo #1! My excuse is it's dark in the garage, the roll hoops hide behind the seat backs, and the roof is up! Never noticed them and they were silent. I listen to the radio so infrequently I didn't remember how the radio worked other than On/Off so I spent five minutes playing with it to figure out how the tone, and faders worked just in case I wanted to listen some day. All work as intended. I centered all of them for now as the only music I listen to in the car is VTEC,

Ok! Very informative thread! Thank you guys!

So if I understand correctly, the headrest speakers (2nd photo) is NOT compatible with 06+ cars, because the seat design is different than 00-05 and they don't physically fit in the 06+ cars.

But, the 06-09 roll hoop speakers (1st photo) do physically fit on the 00-05 cars, just it depends if your stereo has the leads for the extra speakers.

Is that correct?

There are little speaker grills on either side of the 2006+ roll bar covers as shown in Photo 1 -- I'm guessing you don't have them. I've seen no affirmation they're present in pre-2006 cars. They were hard to see in poor light in my car this morning, The roll bar covers may be interchangeable but only available on the salvage market.

Just to add a little more detail on the accessory headrest speakers (P/N 08A54-S2A-100): Dealer installed option. Owners manual is copyright 2003. 15 pages of installation instructions!
