Serial control of head unit?
So, ive got a Rio Car/Empeg on the way to me (employee pricing!
), and Id like to avoid using an IR-Blaster. Its possible to control the Empeg via RS232 through a terminal window, Im wondering if there is any solution out there to do this for me (will the PAC do it?) I'd like to avoid programming a PIC or something, but I will if i have to.

How about a little 8088 based Hewlett Packard palmtop. The 100lx and 200lx are great little DOS computers that have terminal emulation in ROM and a serial port.
There are quite a few on ebay. The best website that I know of is http://www.palmtoppaper.com/
These are eleven ounce wonders that run on two AA batteries and run dos versions of millions of programs.
I use one as the terminal on a tiny ham radio that I use for packet.

What's the serial protocol? Baud rate, parity, exact messages being sent? Does the documentation give you the details?
Just curious, as I am considering the same type of player in the future. I'm not a software guy, but I could do a PIC-basic module (stamp) to convert the dash controls to serial data output, but it has limitations on baud rate and such (as well as costing $50 just for the PIC module), hence the question.

Modifry:
I could very easily add a Serial output to the S2000 dash controls adapter I am making. (See the thread: Dash controls to Sony Deck Interface) I am currently working on making it work with a Sony Stereo, but a Serial output would be very easy. (I am already outputing serial for debugging the circuit). I want to finish the Sony deck control first and then I'll look at adding Serial to it. It would help to know what the serial specs are though, I am currently using 19200 to output debugging information, and can output any variety of messages as needed, but would need to know what messages to send to do what functions.
