Default Setting gains for the sub?

I read the section in the faq about setting the gains for an amp. I did this same procedure to set the gains on my sound stream van gogh and utopias. Now my question is how would i set the gains on the sub? Would the same procedure work? Turnign down the gain all the way, and sending the hu signal to the sub while raising the level until distortion or clipping appear, then turning it down a bit and then cranking up the gain until the distortion or clipping appear? Would this work. If not, how have you guys set your gains for the subs.

Ok...here is my way...tried and true by me....others may have a different system

1. Turn sub amp gains to 0, and Hz to lowest.
2. Turn headunit (Alpine) to 75% volume, or where you think its the loudest youll go.
3. Set the bass setting to +4
4. Set the sub level to 7
5. Put on music with good bass in it....
6. Slowly turn up gain/freq

When you think its loud, sit in the car and make sure you are happy, if too much, turn it down, to little, turn it up (keep top closed and windows/doors closed)

THats my way....but it may not be your cup of tea.

When you say bass setting to 4, what do you mean, I dont think the 9835 has that. I know i have a bass output level on the 9835, but no bass setting. Also where should I set the crossover point for the 8inch alphasonik. I will try using this method to set the gain for the subwoofer. Thanks .

Hmm...PM Jim (PaS2knut)....I dont know the 9835, since its the only one that is different. I had a whole discussion with him over the phone about it.

As for crossover....I like 80hz, but your taste may vary. I dont like the sub to play too much midbass.

No problem I will send him a PM on the matter. I was thinking about cutting the subs crossover at 50 hz actually since the Utopias can go down to 50 hz. Thanks for the info though.

Its fine until i turn it up... then it makes these little popping noises that I can only hear when I open my trunk.

Is the sub blown? I just bought it (alpha608 wired for 2ohms) and my amp is 300 watts @ 2ohms... it shouldnt be able to blow the sub, right?

No it wont blow the sub, but your amp is (usually) whats causing it to pop.

popping like you're describing generally means that you're reaching the physical limitations of the speaker... ie - some component internally is striking another component internally, which makes the sound. turn down the gains.

(generally, the voice coil (or former) is striking the back plate, front plate, or pole piece.
