Well after lots and lots of thoughts of if I should or should not do this. I gave in the the urges and took the plunge.
I am an avid lover of Alpine head units, as every car in our drive way has one. I have an ILX-W555bt in my truck
the wife has an ILX-650 in the Accord, and now my S2000 has a ILX-407 where the 9883 used to reside.
This is what I have been running with for the last few years, no Bluetooth with was a PITA. Other than that the radio was/is awesome (for its age) This is the new hotness Alpine ILX-407 with lots of expandability option and BT.
As many of you know there has to be some things lost in order to make a DD HU fit in this location.
Some people would go as far to use fiber glass to reshape the location some go an easier route (I did) First thing I did was make sure all the wiring (RCA, E-brake bypass, and DCI) was still working. Then I made the cuts in the center location. Once I had everything wired and fit into place. I cut a piece of ABS plastic for the trim to hide the exposed areas usually hidden by the flip up door.
And here it is finished with the final trimming done and the trim piece attached and the Apexi in the new location..... Alpine, Apexi, and Modifri phone mount. All in fingertip reach from 6th gear The Apexi is actually mounted with the base under the center console. This is much better than where it was before. I added a pic of my car, just like I did to the head unit in my truck. This way if it ever got stolen, I have proof that it actually is mine.
I would not do that to my car, but a great job none-the-less, and most importantly, looks clean. Was the airflow to the air vents that are no longer there directed somewhere else?
Very nice install. I also put the ILX-W650 in my S2000 as well. How do you like the ILX-W407 vs W650?
BTW, add a KTA-450 amp will make it sound much better..it's plug and play....then an amp in the trunk
I actually like them both equally. The 407 has HDMI where the 650 does not. This way I can hook up my Firestick to it,
and use my phone as a hot spot to watch movies, or if I have the Need for Speed while at a show or something, I can
pop in the Playstation and get my fix. The one thing I do not like about the 407 is the 5 band EQ, compared to the EQ on my 555bt in my truck and the 650 in the Accord.
Makes tuning a bit frustrating.
