Snap, Crackle & Pop
....and I don't mean the cereal characters.
Here's the deal. I was given an '03 head unit in good working condition by a friend to upgrade from the OEM unit in my MY00.
Simple plug and play - right?
Well evidently not because now I get this terrible crackling sound from the right side whenever I turn it up past about 25%. The strange thing is that if I turn it WAY up and almost max it, the crackling goes away and I can turn it back down to a more normal volume with good sound. However, if the music goes quiet (like in between songs/tracks) the crackling comes back.
This happens with radio and CD functions. I have stock speakers that have been fine up til this point - not blown yet. Hmmmmmmmm.
I am also feeling like the right side is slightly muted until after I clear the crackling (with high volume), then it sounds more balanced.
It has been suggested that I remove the headunit and clean all the contacts/connections and re-connect, but I haven't made time for that yet.
Any help or suggestions to clear this up would be greatly appreciated,
Hockey

Bump. I'll take a shot.
Could be a grounding problem. If you've got your audio wires in correctly, which I asssume you do, there's not a whole lot that can go wrong if you're sure the HU is still good.
Check out a thread on grounding here (discussing the more problem grounding problem of whine, related to engine RPM):
