I went Focal a few weeks ago.
Great so far. There's only so much two speakers can do though.

Installed Hertz HCX-165s months ago, they still blow my mind. I have them hooked up to a mild 2-channel amp, with a 10" 200w sub along for the ride. All I needed for the Hertz speakers was Modifry spacers.

Hertz makes some killer, killer stuff. Good ranking of of what's out there: https://www.caraudionow.com/best-rat...-car-speakers/

I got mine dirty cheap from a store on sale - like $150 CAD?

Not my review no.
Not sure about AP1 fitment. Mine's an AP2. That said - they (installer) did have to build new custom brackets for them to sit in the door. I think this is somewhat typical of any upgraded speaker you choose.

Many of the aftermarket speaker options don't fit in the stock basket (or line up with the holes) and require a bracket at minimum to mount, though many options will require a spacer to ensure their magnet clears the window when it is retracted.

Just installed Polk DB652 this evening. The full install took about an hour being extremely careful with everything.
I ordered from crutchfield.com and they included free hardware (harness).

I didn't need brackets, however, as you've likely read all over the forum you will need to trim out the back off the speaker bowls. The lower portion where the connectors go will require a bit more trimming. (using air tools and a Dremel worked wonders )

Also the speakers have a lower profile that stock, so no issues with the window being down.

As far as the sound upgrade, its noticeable, but nothing that is going to blow your mind. This is paired with my Kenwood Excelon KDC-X998.

Could you explain this a bit more? I have never been inside these doors. Is the area that needs trimming part of the door or part of the speaker? Sorry for the dumb question! Are you trimming out plastic or metal?

I am considering whether to keep my stock speakers or upgrade. I have a new Alpine head unit. I'm considering adding the small alpine amp that fits behind the dash and maybe a speaker upgrade, that's it. No sub no added speakers. Just trying to get a little more depth to the sound I have now which is not too bad as is. Although it is certainly nothing to write home about.

Mostly, I just listen to the engine growl.

I put the Polk DB6501 component in my '06 and pleasantly surprised by the upgrade with my stock head unit. Installing them required a bit of creativity but did not require modifying the stock basket for the woofer.
