I am ordering the Spods this weekend and need to choose some speakers to install in them. firstly, will 6X9s fit in the spod housing with some judicious cutting? If not, what is a good deal in 5.25 to fit in it. I have heard that going with a component 5.25/tweeter makes a huge difference, but it also makes a huge difference in cost. worth it? I am looking to spend around $100 for the speakers and want the best that I can get for that. Brand names? Models? Vendors?
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

A 6x9 will not fit in the Spod.
Here are a bunch of 5 1/4" speakers, and it give you an idea of price. I would recommend that you go to an audio shop and listen to the speakers yourself to decide. Once you've decided which speaker sounds good then shop around to find the best price. Crutchfied prices are high, but they are factory authorized and thus carry a warranty if you need it.

It really depends on what you want.
Do you want the best sound possible cost no object than you should go with some components and a separate amp. Be advised that the front speakers are MUCH more important than the pods for sound. Do you want good sound without the extra expense of a amp. Several people have used coaxials as well as components.
I just installed some s-pods yesterday. I went with some Blaupunckt components that were on clearance at Crutchfield for $60 shipped. They work fine for what I wanted which was listenable volume with the top down at highway speed.
I think the best bang for the buck would be the infinity reference series. If you want to go coaxials people have successfully used Bostons and Eclipse.
I agree with PAS2KNut If you have the opportunity I would strongly urge you to listen before you buy.

If you are just looking to hear the radio @ highway speeds, I got the Blaupunkt TsC series from Crutchfield.com. THey were on sale, and should still be on sale if they have not run out, for $40-45. Can't beat that price for components. I like them so much I am considering getting a pair of 6.5" TsC components for the doors.
Keep in mind I do not / am not amping the drivers. I have heard that if you amp these speakers they become less accurate, due to the slightly heavier plastic woofer. If you are amping and still want extreme accuracy, look for aluminum of some other light metal on the woofer.
