I had a similar problem with my stock '05 stereo (static noise at low volume). At the advice of this thread and a PM conversation with Neutered Sputniks, I ensured that the main battery ground was tight and secure. I also used an ohmmeter to test between the ground point on the firewall and the negative battery terminal. A reading of <4ohms let me know that my ground between those two points was sufficient.

The Honda dealer troubleshot the issue for me last week. They checked all of the grounds under the hood and concluded that it had to be an issue with the head unit. I had the unit replaced today under warranty and it solved my problem.

Now that I know I have a good baseline...time to start the upgrading!
