if your soft top is removed - you have lots of room back there, i would build a encloser that takes up that space, i bet i could get 3 10's in there.
So you've got 5.5" in height, but what about the other dimensions? My advice:
Start measuring, and come up with a good set of dimensions, see what volume is really available. Then, collect Theile-Small parameters for the thin mount speakers you're considering (JL, RF, etc.). Using a box calculator, plug in the parameters and box dimensions/volume, and see which will perform best in the space you have available. You can play around with box size, poly fill, or different drivers to get the response curve you want.
or...
Use the all-too-common approach of picking a random speaker, building whatever box can fit, and plugging it together to see how it works.

That 2nd approach is my fav, Jeff. It's the one I use the most with the bestest results evah.
OP: Look, here's the bottom line. Most people have NEVER heard a properly built/tuned/QUALITY system. NEVER. I can attest to that. I thought the Diamond Hex components in my S (which get rave reviews, rated to be one of the best car audio speakers out there) were the absolute bees-knees (b/c cursing gets edited, lol )... And then I installed some SEAS separates in my truck. Same HU, different speakers. And I get spoiled listening to the clarity/quality of the SEAS speakers. I swapped my Diamond tweeters for SEAS tweeters less than a month later, and this week I'm ordering new woofers to replace the Diamonds. 6 months ago I would have written rave reviews (and in fact did highly recommend them on this forum) about the Diamonds. For the price of Ebay Diamond Hexes (gray market Diamonds), I can pick up a set of SEAS separates that will sound better and come from an authorized dealer.
Just because RF is the best you've ever heard (or haven't been disappointed by) doesn't mean they're the best on the market. Alpine is supposed to be the best - but that's coming from people that use their Ipod and think they're getting the same SQ as off a CD (with the exception of maybe Lossless, you're not).
Even people that are huge JL fans are amazed by how clean the bass is from my Mags (1 in the S, 2 in the truck). Actually, most are amazed at how transparent they are. You won't even notice it's there till it's gone - there's no distortion slap, they have no trouble following any bass line even with a 100Hz/12dB crossover.
Point is...it's hard to find really objective reviews - and even your own experiences aren't all that's out there... Check out the Stereo Integrity forums for reviews from audiophiles comparing the Mag to all other SQ subs out there.

take out or cut the tray and see how much more room you get measuring down to the top of the spare tire security bolt
