Default suggestions for changing my headunit

ok, my oem stacker is starting to skip really badly, it isnt the cds, basically, ive replaced the stacker with another oem as i had my original one jam up and basically crapped itself, so i picked up another one 2nd hand. now its starting to crap itself, probably a dodgy laser, who knows

anyway, long story short, ive decided to purchase a new headunit, remove my stacker (in australia, the 8 disc changer goes into the secret compartment), look at installing a shallow and small sub into the secret compartment (i have seen a few of these on the market).

currently, i have a set of bostons running of a jl audio amp. i guess i could run my speakers off the headunit and the sub off the amp. my brother has the harmon kardon drive n play in his car, but i decided to just burn the mp3 files onto a dvd and play them on the new headunit.

so my question to u guys is this. i have heard the alpines are good, but what new headunits out now can keep my dash controls.
also, is it as easy as just burning the itunes files onto a dvd and sticking them into the new headunit and they will play? or do i need to reformat them from the aac itunes format back to normal mp3 format, or do the new headunits recognise the itunes file format?
what do u think of the sub idea?

I kept my dash control on our '05 when I installed an Alpine 9857 by using the Modifry direct wire controller. I've had it in a week and am very happy with it, plus I didn't have to screw around with mounting the IR lens on the radio door.
