Default Sweet new Alpine XM head unit

Check this out!

Alpine CDA-9820XM
http://iweb.alpine-usa.com/pls/admn/item_i...name=CDA-9820XM

It's a new head unit with an integrated XM tuner, just hook up an XM antenna and you're good to go. Sweet! I think I may be picking up one of these soon!
(as soon as I can swing the cash )

(sorry if this is a repost, I did do a search first)

more links:

Crutchfield has it in stock for $350.

HookedOnTronics has it for $278, not in stock though, and no warranty.

Etronics has it for $345 shipped, but for $5 more I'd just get it from Crutchfield.

Haven't checked how the local shops are pricing it.

Found the XM press release, apparently this is old news, I missed it somehow.

Still, if I didn't know about it, there's got to be other people that also missed it and might be interested.

This just makes so much more sense than an outboard tuner unit, it saves space, makes installation easier and cleaner, and saves a bunch of moolah as well! I just bought a CDA-9807 for $200, and an Alpine XM tuner (TUA-2020XM) is $250 new from Crutchfield, going for $150 in good shape on eBay. With this new unit, I can save time and hassle and probably $50-$100.

(I sold the 9807 already.)

oops, sorry for getting so excited. it's "just" stereo equipment Avi, calm down!

This ebay seller has 6 for $304 shipped, seems like a decent price.

That's awesome!! I was at a Myer-Emco tonight talking to someone trying to get a feel for what I need to upgrade my stereo system. I'm not sure I want them to do all of the work because its an incredible RIP OFF...they charge you up the @ss. Anyways, I thought I wanted to keep the stock radio but I really want XM...I would have loved to get the Delphi (the silver with orange display) but it doesnt fit anywhere...so now I want to get an XM ready head unit but then you have to get the whole infrared sensor and then the XM box to go with it. So we're looking at a lot of money. Lemme know on what you decide and if you get that unit in your car before I do, please tell all of us how satisfied you are with it!!! Good luck!!!

paradigm, you got it, I will definitely post here if/when I get it.

BTW though, don't talk to anyone at a store about your system - talk to the members here! You've got a valuable resource here - tons of intelligent, helpful people who really know their stuff - with experience with your exact car, and no conflict of interest, nothing to gain from steering you in one direction or another.

Read through some of the posts in this forum, esp. the FAQ at the top, and you'll get a lot of what you need to know.

If you don't see what you're looking for, try a search. If that fails, post a question here. You'll get a better answer than you would at most retail shops.

About labor/installation charges, same thing: ask here for shop recommendations, someone will recommend a reasonable competent shop that won't rip you off.

My own little peice of un-asked for advice: don't keep the stock head unit. It's just not the way to go. If you're on a tight budget, better to buy used stuff on ebay than to use the stock unit.

whew can i ramble or what?

It's a tradeoff, you get XM built in but no mp3/wma playback. I would want both.

Andy, I have the Delphi Skyfi too, my wife gave to me for my birthday last year and it's one of the best presents I've had. I agree it's a great unit, the portability/versatility of it is very smart. However I think it may not be ideal for the S2K because of the lack of excess space in our interiors. It wasn't bad in my RSX, but I really don't think there's enough room in my S2K, especially with my big 6'5" ass in the seat. That's why I'd prefer something like this.
