3.1416*R^2

1 x 10" : 3.1416*5^2 = 78.54 sq.in.

4 x 6.5" : 4*3.1416*3.25^2 = 4*34.33 = 137.31 sq.in.

Stroke is also a factor (stroke * area = displacement), and larger drivers *usually* have a longer stroke (but not always).

He has a 12":

3.1416*6^2 = 113.0976 sq.in.

Hard to believe the extra 24.2 sq in. of the 4 x 6.5 is going to make up for the larger diameter at the lower freqs...

I can't see where 24.2 sq.in. would make much difference, but then I don't understand the idea of making deep bass in the S2k with any driver. With the rag top there is no pressure mode operation, so how is it possible to generate the lowest octave (or two)? If it *is* possible, could someone please explain?

Well if you have the windows open, I wouldn't expect the rag top to make much of a difference...

LOL, or with the top down.

Either way, how is it possible to generate deep bass without room reinforcement or pressure mode? Is it possible?

[QUOTE=jasonw,Dec 8 2005, 06:55 PM] The question was 1 12" vs. 4 6.5".

Wouldn't the 12" have 70.66% more surface area then 4 6.5" speakers?

I think you are generalizing that a larger diameter speaker is required to make low frequency sounds. It isn't required at all.

For practical purposes it usually ends up being that way in houses and cars. But there is no reason to be practical or conventional when you drive an S2000.

This is one car that demands a creative subwoofer solution if you want to maintain its roadster character, and carry two golf bags in the trunk...

MX5, I don't think contained room pressure is required to produce low frequencies. I've been to plenty of outdoor concerts and had my brain rattled and chest thumped...in open air. (You probably guessed about the brain-rattling by now...!)

Are you thinking of the car's resonant frequency? Cars do have a resonance that ends up making the car itself a speaker of sorts.

I toolwell box wouldn't stop you from carrying golf bags would it?

They might affect the sound if you are covering up the sub.

And wouldn't you have to remove the tools? Where would you put them?
