upgrading from the stock head unit
ive never been a ICE type of guy especially in the s2000 but lately the sound quality of the stock system in the car has been irritating me.
the question is..in my previous cars, upgrading the headunit alone yielded much better sound quality with bass a bit more defined and midranges, highs more apparent. will the same apply to the s2000?
also, i have an 07 with the speakers integerated in the rear roll hoops..do those function as tweeters?

The HU in the stock system is way underpowered. You will notice a difference but it still will not sound that great when you replace the HU. It is a great starting point though.
As for the speakers in the rear hoops, I am not familar with them to give an answer. Maybe the EJs will give a little more info.

I know Modifry was working on some replacements for the hoop speakers. He had started a thread with pics of his prototypes. I haven't heard anything new about it lately though.

I just replaced my roll hoop speakers with those that Modify offers. I can't recommend these enough. The difference in sound is amazing. Although the originals, and Modifrys, are not meant to be "drivers", but are more for fill, the difference is terrific. More quality items from Modifry!!!

the rollhoop speakers are not tweeters, they are miniture "full-range" speakers, like you'd find on small computer speaker systems. obviously they won't play bass, but do extend well into the midrange.
on modifry's site, he has sound files comparing the stock speakers with his replacements. the improvement is in "fullness" of the sound. the stock speakers sound extremely thin. i am just not sure i want to modify my stock rollhoop covers to install the modifry speaker replacemnts. i just fade my HU all the way to the front most of the time.
regarding the HU, yes, yuo should find similar improvement upgrading to an aftermarket HU in the S as you found in other cars. if you're still not satisfied, upgrade the speakers (i'd do both at once, but if you found just a HU upgrade sufficent in other cars, perhaps you'll find the same in the S).

Like others said, you'll notice a big improvement over the factory headunit just by upgrading the headunit. I have an '06 (which has a half decent oem headunit), and noticed it distorts badly when you turn the volume up (but is decent at lower volumes). I replaced it with a 9887 and it's dramatically better at higher volumes (and better at lower volumes).
Like philbert said, the rear hoop speakers sound like garbage, and it's best to just fade them out. I need to install the polk components and 2 channel amp I have sitting around, and am thinking that after installing the new speakers and amp, I might be happy enough with the system to consider not buying a sub.. we'll see..
