Default replacement speakers

I have an 02 model and am not satisfied with the audio system in the car.. top down just doesn't do it for me.. many times replacing the head unit will do wonders for sound quality (especially when at higher volumes), but i'm thinking aobut just upgrading my stock speakers.. does anyone have any suggestions as to a good pair. Also, what size are the stock speakers?
thanks

search is your friend.... ....they are supposedly 6.5". They are kinda on the small side, though. I have heard that the Infinity Reference series are a direct drop in. I have the Blaupunkt ODCa660 oversized drivers with 1" silk tweeters (mounted under the A-pillars). They required a 3/4" mdf spacer. They sound 1000% better (I am running stock HU as my Alpine is in for repairs now).

There is a debate about the EXACT size. They are not a TRUE 6.5, but are not a TRUE 5.25 either. They are european sized 6.5's, which are smaller. The diameter of the cone (surround and all) is only just over 5", but the outside diameter of the MOUNTING is close to 6.5". I have heard that teh Infinity Reference series are pretty much a drop in. Might also want to look at the Blaupunkt Overdrive series, as they are shallow mount.

PM MacGyver, he has a website that has the EXACT dimensions of the stock speaker and the mounting basket.

I would recommend a new HU as well. The speakers and a new HU will make a WORLD of difference. I can hear mine loud and clear with top down at 90+. If you want to really hear the bass at speed, with top down, you will need a sub, though. I got my ENTIRE system for under $800.

Alpine 9851 HU- $260 @ best buy (can be had for $200 on ebay)

Blaupunkt ODCa660 components - $60 (retail $195) from www.ikesound.com. Thes require some modification to install. I put the tweeters under the a-pillar trims, and drilled speaker holes in the trims, drivers required 3/4" MDF spacer ring to fit. Infinity reference series I have heard are direct drop in's, but are lacking on the low end.

Infinity 7520a amp - $99 from www.cardomain.com (283WRMS of power to the sub)

Clarion SW10x - $40 from crutchfield.....good sub, dunno why so cheap!

custom box from ebay - $150 shipped

modifry DCI - to retain stock dash controls $100ish

Total:

250 + 60 + 99 + 40 + 150 + 100 = $699....WORTH EVERY PENNY!

You do not need to follow my system, I am just showing you what can be done with under $700. I wired and installed it with a friend of mine over 2 days....nothing too difficult, provided you know how to solder.

thanks john,
i may hold off on the sub (even though i love the bass - and it helps drown the drone from exhaust) truck just doesn't have enough space, unless it's some kind of stealth system. i am definitely gonna do the HU and speakers.. the dci possibly too..
do you have any pics of your set up? does the HU fit stock (radio cover still functional?
thanks

Here are some pics of the trunk setup....dont have any of the HU. Yes, the door still closes and works fine. The reason why this HU with a sliding face will work is it does not slide BELOW the bottom of the unit. It levels out to almost horizontal for CD insertion.

Here is a pic of the trunk....I will try to get more of the actual HU and speakers tomorrow. Pics on those are pretty much useless anyhow...I have NO bling on my setup.....do not want to temp people who are less than honest .
