Default Volume goes down on its own

Problem is from my stock HU in my 2004 S

So a minute into my drive the stereo just went out and I had no sound. I tried the radio and CD, neither had any sound. Anyway I drove without sound until I got back home. When I got back I turned the stereo off and back on. I could hear the sound start at a normal level and then go right back to no sound. Regardless of where the volume was I had no sound. It's as if the volume knob was being turned down to 0 on its own. I had to turn the stereo off and on just to hear any sound which lasted only for a sec before the volume went dead again.

I tried disconnecting the battery to reset it, nothing, same problem. Any idea? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

First line says Stock HU.

My old LTC had this problem, it was a bad HU (well the amp of the HU I would guess). Not sure if that's always the cause though, I've only had this happen once*.

*I've seen wiring shorts do this also, but I doubt it's rewired and it's only a 2-3 year old car, hopefully no defective wiring with insulation cracking off..

Yea, stock radio.

Thanks Dave.

I'll play around with it some more, maybe it'll fix itself

Wiring has never been touched so I hope it isnt that either. But I figure if it was the wiring I wouldn't hear any sound at all. Instead I have sound as soon as a I turn it on and then the volume lowers till there's no sound. Anyway, thanks for the info.

The early years (00 & 01?) had this problem often, and it indeed was a bad HU. Until people figured out what it was (after enough of them had the same symptom) it was very frustrating for both owners and dealers to diagnose becauseit was so intermittent.

Ahaha, I was just coming over to this forum to do a search and see if this has come up before. Here it is on the 1st page!!! Brilliant!!!

At first I thought it was a failing battery that was affecting my OEM stereo volume control. I have been living with this annoyance for quite some time. Finally got around to replacing the battery and....what do you know?......problem still exists. The volume justs goes down on its own. I can drop the radio door and watch the bars go lower and lower.

Maybe the car doesn't like my music choice at the time. I should start documenting what songs are playing when this happens.
