I just switched from the 9857 to the 9885. Depending on what you are doing with your system would switch which one I would recommend.

If you aren't planning on using amps (or low quality ones), I would recommend the 9857, The BBE and other sound quality features are nice and help to get the sound to where you would like it. The only thing I didn't like was the preouts are only 2Volts.

Switching to the 9885 I lost some of the sound options, but gained 4V preouts. Since I am only using my amps, which have built in X-overs the loss on the deck didn't bother me. The 4V also cleaned up the signal my amps were getting which got rid of a little hum I was experiencing before.

Hope this helps, feel free to hit me up with some more direct questions.

Took the risk and bought on eBay for around $230 shipped. I normally like to purchase from authourized retailers, but the local BestBuy didn't have it yet.

You should have went with the new Alpine 9885. But you did get a good deal with the alpine 9857.

The Alpine 9885 is one of my favorites now..(If there is anything wrong with your Alpine 9857, i'm selling mine for $200 with modifry control unit it's only 3 months old)

sorry to invade the topic but...
you can buy an equalizer that alters the pre-out volts?

How much does one of those run?

I second the 9885. I've had mine for a few months (see my thread) and I'm loving it! It's a really good radio.
